The Building
The Curve is a landmark £20 million, four-storey flagship development at Teesside University, designed to reflect the institution’s bold and aspirational vision. Officially opened to students in the summer of 2015, this environmentally friendly building features striking gold-coloured panelling and cutting-edge architectural design.
The 1,476 square metre building includes a large auditorium lecture theatre, social learning spaces, multipurpose areas for receptions and exhibitions, and several general-purpose teaching rooms.
The Requirements
With a gutter surrounding the perimeter of the roof and the presence of Solar PV Panels, the roof area that would require frequent maintenance and upkeep for many years to come. As operatives would be accessing the roof area for general inspection and maintenance purposes, the Work At Height Regulations (WAHR) state that competent and trained workers must use suitable fall protection equipment.
The Solutions
Eurosafe collaborated with the design team at European Roofing to deliver a practical and visually sympathetic fall protection solution. The installation included:
6 horizontal Latchways Constant Force® fall protection systems
2 isolated anchor posts
Approximately 210 linear metres of Kalzip Quick Fix Grillage to provide a safe walking area for the operatives
These systems enable full fall restraint access to all necessary areas of the roof, offering both safety and ease of use for maintenance personnel.
All installations comply with the Work at Height Regulations, relevant British Standards, and manufacturer guidelines.

The Curve now benefits from a discreet and fully compliant fall protection and access solution that ensures the safety of operatives carrying out rooftop maintenance. The system’s design complements the building’s modern architecture while providing long-term value through durability and ease of access.
