Eyebolts Explained: What Are Single Point Anchors and Do They Really Need Testing?

When it comes to keeping people safe while working at height, single point anchors – often referred to as eyebolts – play a crucial role. These small but mighty fixtures are commonly used near openings or fall hazards and are classified as Class A1 Fall Protection systems under BS EN 795. Designed for a single user in either a fall arrest or restraint situation, they’re a fundamental part of many height safety strategies.

But what exactly do they do, where are they used, and how often should they be tested?

What Is a Single Point Anchor?

Eyebolts are fixed anchor points installed in buildings to secure a lanyard or lifeline. You’ll find them in a range of environments – from discreet fittings in hotel rooms or office spaces, to high-visibility anchors in busy plant rooms or industrial settings, where they need to stand out among pipes, ductwork, and steel structures.

Wherever they’re installed, they all serve the same essential purpose: to protect lives.

Do Eyebolts Need Testing?

Yes – and regularly. Under BS 7883:2005, eyebolts used as Class A1 anchors must undergo periodic inspection and testing to ensure they remain safe and fit for purpose. This standard outlines key requirements, including their location, compatibility with the structure, and resistance to corrosion.

Here’s what the standard recommends:

  • Every 12 months for eyebolts used in fall arrest.

  • Every 6 months for those used in rope access.

These inspections must be carried out by certified professionals, who will:

  • Verify that the eyebolt type is suitable for the structure.

  • Check that it's positioned correctly, including minimum edge distances.

  • Confirm that it's made from approved, corrosion-resistant materials.

  • Ensure it meets the requirements of BS EN 795.

Neglecting these checks could lead to unsafe conditions and even compliance issues, especially in older buildings where anchors were installed before updated regulations.
