Understanding the Various Types of Abseil Equipment
Industrial abseil access is a safe and efficient method used to reach building façades for window cleaning, general maintenance, inspections, and surveys. This technique is widely adopted due to its versatility, particularly on high-rise or complex structures where traditional access methods, such as scaffolding, may be impractical or costly.
At Eurosafe, our highly skilled IRATA-certified technicians utilise this work positioning system to ascend and descend using ropes, enabling them to carry out tasks with precision and efficiency. Below, we explore the main types of abseil access equipment commonly used by abseiling contractors.
Abseil Eyebolts
Abseil eyebolts are typically installed in pairs to provide secure attachment points for both a working rope and a safety (backup) rope. These installations are essential for ensuring the safety of the operative during work at height.
To guarantee their integrity, abseil eyebolts are inspected and tested in accordance with LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) 1998 and BS EN 7883. Regular inspections and proper maintenance are key to ensuring compliance and safety.

Abseil Rails
Abseil rails are designed to facilitate horizontal movement along a building’s façade. They are generally fitted with carriages that move left and right, each with two secure points for attaching both the working and safety ropes.
Like eyebolts, abseil rails and carriages must be routinely inspected and tested to meet LOLER and BS EN 7883 standards, ensuring their safe and reliable use for rope access work.
Abseil Sockets and Davits
In locations where there is a parapet, glazed balustrade, or other obstruction to clear, a socket and davit system is commonly used. The socket is permanently fixed to the building structure, while the davit - a portable arm - can be removed when not in use. This arrangement provides an ideal anchor point for abseilers while maintaining the building’s aesthetic.
As with other abseil systems, regular inspection and proof testing are required, particularly where socket fixings are concealed, to confirm that the system remains safe and secure.
