Safety at the highest level at University of Amsterdam
Safety is an essential part of every construction project. And that is certainly true for an iconic building, such as the new library of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Located in the bustling city center, where logistical challenges are significant, Eurosafe played a crucial role in creating a safe working environment. From fall protection to designing an innovative rail system for the maintenance of the glass facades: Eurosafe was involved from the initial design to the final phase.

The Building
Eurosafe was involved early in the construction of the new University Library at the UvA. The project presented a logistical challenge, involving the expansion of an existing building with new construction in the busy city center. Contractor BINX Smartility knew Eurosafe from previous projects and asked them to help think about safety solutions. "We were asked to come up with integrated solutions that allow everyone to work safely," says Jan Kwanten, Eurosafe NL Business Development Director.
The Requirement
One of the most striking elements of the project was the glass facade. The blind facade with large lettering presented a unique challenge: how do you ensure that window cleaners can safely access the glass? Eurosafe designed a special rail system that aligns precisely with the shape of the facade and could be installed without disrupting the building's aesthetics.
Additionally, Eurosafe installed a fixed ladder for cleaning the glass canopy above the atrium, an element Kwanten and his team are proud of. "That glass canopy is truly unique. It required perfect collaboration with the other parties."
The Solution
Installing fall protection on the flat roof and the rail system for the glass facade were only a part of the project. What makes this work special is the close collaboration with various partners and stakeholders. "The beauty of a project like this is that you really have to work on a custom basis," says Jan Kwanten. "You are dealing with architects, contractors, and structural engineers, and everyone needs to be on the same page."
At Eurosafe, the customer comes first, and this is evident in their involvement in the design process. "We are increasingly being asked to contribute ideas at an early stage. This not only makes it safer but also ensures the building looks better, because the safety solutions are perfectly integrated into the design."
Expertise and experience
Eurosafe has built a strong reputation through its integrated approach and customer-oriented working method. "We were the first in the Netherlands to introduce fall protection on flat roofs. By now, everyone is aware of the importance of this," says Kwanten. The combination of expertise and experience makes Eurosafe the ideal partner for complex projects such as the UvA Library.
Through their focus on long-term safety, including training and annual inspections, Eurosafe remains committed to building safety even after construction is completed. "We always strive for long-term relationships with our clients," concludes Kwanten. "We not only deliver the project but also continue to ensure safe working conditions in the long term."
