De Scheg Artificial Ice Rink, Deventer, NL

Safety Circle steps used in this project

The Building

De Scheg, Deventer’s artificial ice rink, features a striking architectural tent canvas suspended above it. Its complex structure and delicate fabric required a specialised cleaning approach.

How do you keep such an impressive canvas clean in a safe way? "Because it is such a special, but complex to maintain fabric, we want the cleaning work to be carried out as safely as possible," says Edwin Brokelman, Project Manager Maintenance and Management at Van Wijnen on behalf of Sportbedrijf Deventer.

The Challenge

High-pressure cleaning was not an option, as it could damage the protective layer. Additionally, green deposits had formed on the steel structure, necessitating thorough yet delicate cleaning. Given the height and complexity, traditional access methods like cherry pickers were impractical.

The tent canvas needed careful maintenance to preserve its integrity while ensuring the supporting steel structure was properly cleaned. Safety remained the top priority throughout the project.

The Solution

Eurosafe NL deployed its expert Rope Access team to carry out the cleaning safely and efficiently. Soft brushes and brooms were used on the tent canvas to prevent damage, while the steel structure was treated with a high-pressure cleaner.

During the project, our team also inspected and maintained the existing fall protection systems in the crow’s nests. The vertical access system installed during construction was checked, leading to minor maintenance work being completed immediately.

Rope Access - the advantages

Two lines attached to an anchor point ensure that a user enters the workplace. A second line is used as a safety line. Activities such as inspection, assembly, maintenance, repair, painting and cleaning will be possible in hard-to-reach places. However, there are other advantages. Eurosafe lists them for you.

The steel structure has been cleaned with a high-pressure cleaner and now looks clean and fresh again. And because our technicians were at height anyway, they were able to immediately carry out inspection and maintenance on the fall protection already present in the crow nests. The vertical system that was installed during construction to get to the crow nests was also inspected. This resulted in small-scale maintenance that was carried out immediately.
