Hampton By Hilton, London Stansted Airport

The Building
Managed by Cambridge Maintenance Services Ltd, the Hampton by Hilton is a multi-storey hotel located within the grounds of London Stansted Airport, providing essential accommodation for travellers and airport staff alike.
The the building features a flat roof on the 7th floor which require unrestricted access to the entire roof area for maintenance and inspection purposes.
The Challenge
Cambridge Maintenance Services Ltd commissioned an independent consultancy to assess the hazards associated with roof access for general maintenance.
The existing ManSafe system installed on the flat roof was deemed non-compliant due to the absence of a technical file and insufficient information regarding the structural fixing background. As a result, the system could not be certified for safe use.
The consultant identified several critical safety concerns:
Operatives could still approach the roof edge to a point where they could fall and become suspended.
The likelihood of a fall was heightened by the presence of algae on the roof, creating a slippery surface.
Additional trip hazards were present, including cable trays and the fall protection systems themselves.
The report recommended a more robust and passive fall protection measure to eliminate the reliance on PPE and reduce the risk to personnel.
The Solution
In response to the consultant’s findings, a collective protection system was proposed for the building perimeter to provide full roof access without the need for user training.
Eurosafe designed, supplied, and installed a complete Permanent Counterweighted Guardrail System (PCGS) using SolidRail Freestanding Guardrail. This system was selected due to its compliance with BS 13700:2021 and its suitability for retrofitting on existing buildings without the need for roof penetration.
Wind loading calculations were performed to ensure the system’s performance was sufficient for the building’s height and exposed location.

Project Highlights
Compliance: Designed to meet the latest standards (BS 13700:2021).
Customised Design: Site-specific wind load calculations ensured the system’s long-term integrity.
Minimal Disruption: The system’s ease of installation allowed the works to be completed efficiently without interrupting operations at the fully functioning hotel.
Long-Term Safety: The freestanding guardrail provides full perimeter edge protection, significantly reducing risk and removing the need for PPE or horizontal line systems.
Outcome
The installed guardrail system now provides continuous, passive edge protection across the entire 7th floor roof, ensuring safe access for maintenance personnel and enhancing overall safety without the need for specialist training or PPE.
Eurosafe’s tailored solution has delivered long-term safety benefits for both the client and building users, supporting ongoing maintenance works with minimal operational impact.
