Can you give a brief overview of your career before joining Eurosafe?

After leaving school in 1994, I took a part time job at Burger King whilst I did A levels (Law and Business studies) after which I went full time and worked my way up to store manager. My first store was Meadowhall, which had 100+ employees and was one of the busiest in the north of England. I then moved around a few northern stores seeking to improve the way they ran, before I eventually left in 2004 to join Eurosafe.

When did you join Eurosafe, and what attracted you to the business?

I joined in Oct 2004. After 10 years in the same role at Burger King I felt the available progress in a franchised business, with ownership changing hands quite regularly, wasn’t going to offer me what I wanted as a career. My brother worked at Eurosafe already, and it seemed the opposite of what I was used to; physical work, getting out around the UK and more sociable hours, which was important to me with a young family. I took a leap of faith, and haven’t looked back since.

Can you take us through your career progression within Eurosafe?

My first role in 2004 was as an Installation Operative, essentially working under my younger brother. I worked on construction sites fitting PFPS, guardrail, ladders etc. Then, after about 8 months, I became a supervisor, running my own jobs. 18 months later, in 2006, I was offered the opportunity to become a Contracts Manager, managing installation contracts, which I did for a decade.

In 2016, I became the Inspection Operations Manager, running my own team undertaking PPM compliance inspections with a small admin team as back up. In 2019, I took a new role as Operations Director within the Test and Inspection department and formed part of the new Eurosafe board. As the business grew, Eurosafe formed the group of companies we are now, and with the departure of one of the original founding directors, I took up the position of Managing Director of Eurosafe Compliance Ltd in July 2025.

What do you enjoy most about working at Eurosafe?

The people. I enjoy working with them and I enjoy seeing them being motivated to work as a team, continually seeking to improve and in return achieve their personal goals. Also, the fact that we strive to make the correct decisions and advise the clients as honestly as possible. It might sound strange to someone who runs a business, but as a company, we prioritise doing the right thing over whether we are going to make/lose money from an action or decision. If we do the job right, the financial success will naturally follow. This is how safety companies should be run.

What professional qualifications, memberships, certifications or leadership training have you completed?

I have few formal qualifications to really to shout about other than GSCE’s and the odd A level. Having to work very hard and trying my best at everything that I have been tasked with, coupled with my experience in having to be organised and managing multiple people over the past 32 years, seems to have come in very handy in the roles I’ve held.

I hold IOSH and NEBOSH (General certificate) certification and have attended a few managerial ourses/workshops which, if anything, helped me brush up on the skills I have learned over the past years.

Tell us about the key achievements or projects you’re particularly proud of.

Key Achievements: Managing the successful growth of the inspection department from 10no full time employees/4no vans in 2016 to the current resource 110no employees/33no vans. This has created career opportunities for employees who see the benefit in what we do. I’m proud that every manager in the Compliance Department began their Eurosafe career working on site, either as an operative or as admin. In turn, this has created the knowledge at managerial level required to provide great leadership to employees - and a great service to our clients. There’s an inspiring thirst for continual improvement throughout the ranks.

The project that stands out for me is Studio City in Macau, China, from 2015. This involved surveying the site to install 30+ overhead cable systems, which in turn required the fabrication of bespoke steel post end anchors. The systems were fabricated in Sheffield, with materials/tools/PFPE flown over to Macau. Luckily, it went without any major issues - if we had one bolt missing, or a single steelwork location had been surveyed incorrectly, the job would have been inevitably delayed due to the logistics.

How would you describe your leadership philosophy/approach?

Communication and encouraging engagement are key to creating a team that feel they can take ownership of their responsibilities. Treating every member of the company with respect, no matter what position they hold, is important to create a collaborative environment and ensure the service provided is the best it can be.

Eurosafe has 4 core values: Safety, Integrity, Quality and Teamwork. I’ve always pointed out a 5th quality to our team – Enjoy Yourself! You can only enjoy yourself when your issues are being addressed, so I encourage everyone to pipe up when something is incorrect or bugging them. It’s important that there’s an open-door policy, with the same value placed on each other’s contribution to the work we do, be it as the newest starting engineer, office-based administrator, or an MD. Everyone’s opinions matter, and every bit of effort is appreciated. As a Managing Director, my job is to enable everyone else to do their job and succeed. Communication and engagement are central to achieving this.

What advice would you give to someone looking to build a successful career in our industry?

1. Don’t be scared to make a decision.

Occasionally, the wrong decision might be made - but at least you’ll have learned something.

2. Be open to people’s opinions - especially from a management point of view.

Remember, you aren’t doing the job you are asking someone else to do, so it matters what they think and if they have constructive feedback/suggestions (the alternative is to do it yourself!!).

3. Be honest!

Clients see us as the experts in our field and ask us all sorts of questions, but if you don’t know the answer, say so! Always be curious, just make sure you find the answer and get back to them. Now two people know the answer! The same principle applies to mentoring employees.

4. Bad days happen, and you can’t help it.

You’re always a better and more experienced person after a bad day. Compliance Ltd deals in failures, so sometimes the day feels filled with negativity. This is because the process works, and all the positive actions have therefore flown through the system unnoticed, leaving only a fail to deal with. In other words, the system worked, and we’re left with the problems to address and learn from!

What are your vision and priorities for the future of your department or the business?

We want to maintain the level of growth and improvement that we’ve seen in the past 10 years into the future. We’ve always aimed for 15% growth, generally achieving 20% or more. This doesn’t need to stop anywhere; we just need to keep doing what we are doing in this respect.

The priorities are to improve our sales, operations and client communication processes, using modern tools and fresh ideas. This will lead to Eurosafe succeeding as a business, subsequently allowing everyone to achieve what they personally want out of Eurosafe.

Better client relationships need to be created - just sending out emails/reports/quotes doesn’t create good relationships with clients. The past two and half years have shone a light on what can happen if we don’t inform clients in a personable way. We need to speak to them more, see them more, better inform them of results and what their options are.

Further regionalisation of our business is also key to being able to provide a good value service to our clients and better quality of life for our employees.
