Eurosafe team takes on Snowdon in support of MANUP? charity

Members of the Eurosafe Contracting team recently took to the mountains, undertaking a challenging climb of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) to raise money and awareness for men’s mental health charity MANUP?

On 25 September, colleagues from across Eurosafe came together to tackle a 10-mile route, ascending via the Pyg Track before returning via the Miners’ Track. Despite facing rain, wind and unpredictable mountain weather, the team completed the challenge in an impressive four hours and 20 minutes, excluding time for a well-earned beer and sausage roll at the top!

More importantly, the challenge provided an opportunity to bring colleagues together, start conversations around men’s mental health and raise funds for a cause that resonates strongly with the team.

Why MANUP?

With mental health increasingly discussed across construction and other site-based industries, the team wanted to support a charity whose message could help turn awareness into genuine conversations.

MANUP? stood out in particular because of its name and its approach to challenging the phrase “man up” and the attitudes surrounding men’s mental health.

As one member of the Contracting team explained:

“We hear the same talk in site inductions, but very little ever stands out. For me, the name MANUP? helps spark conversations. We’re probably all guilty of having said ‘man up’ to a friend or colleague before, and that’s what initially drew me towards the charity.
Looking into what they do, they don’t just support men going through mental health issues; they also look at why these issues happen and what can be done to support men before they reach the stage where they need to ask for help.”

Getting outdoors and talking

Choosing Snowdon as the challenge was also closely connected to the team’s reasons for supporting a mental health charity.

Getting outdoors, stepping away from everyday distractions and spending time with other people provides a welcome opportunity to switch off and talk – making the challenge a fitting way for the team to show its support.

“I believe getting outdoors is a great stress reliever and great for your mental health. Especially when there’s no phone signal and all you can do is talk and enjoy the task ahead.
“Couple that with the views of Snowdon and a group of like-minded people taking on the challenge together, and there isn’t really much else you need. It’s a great team-building exercise too.”

Although the weather meant the famous Snowdon views may not always have been quite as spectacular as hoped, spirits remained high. When conditions became particularly tough, Uchenna ‘DJ’ Madumere helped keep everyone moving with music from his JBL speaker.

Bringing colleagues together

The challenge brought together employees from different roles and levels of the business, including site teams, contracting management, senior management, sales and IT.

With colleagues working from various sites, departments and locations, opportunities to spend time together away from the day-to-day working environment are limited. The climb gave everyone the chance to get to know the people behind the phone calls and emails while undertaking a joint venture.

Having such a varied group take part made the day particularly valuable. As the team put it:

“We’re all often just voices on the phone to each other, or the face you see once a year at the works do. It was really nice to have a mix of management join us.”

A fantastic team effort for an important cause

Covering 10 miles in difficult weather is no small achievement, but the team didn’t let the conditions stop them from completing the challenge.

The day demonstrated teamwork and determination, while helping to highlight an important message: conversations about men’s mental health shouldn’t only happen when someone reaches crisis point.
